 Newsletter October 2016

President’s note

First, let me stress the main point for BCT in 2016.

Yes, like all of the people in the country, we are saddened by hearing the news of the passing of the King Bhumibol Adulyadej. On behalf of the entire BCT team, I extend my heartfelt condolences for all the people in the Kingdom. Also, to respect our host country in this period remembering us when King Baudewijn/Baudouin passed away in July 1993, you have seen that some events have been cancelled or postponed...

These events were organized by a brand new BCT committee. Let me then give you some details about the recent changes in your Belgian Club. In June, in the last newsletter, you must have been reading that there was some departures in the BCT’s committee. We had to say with regret goodbye to 4 team members; Freddy, the treasurer, now focusing 100% of his time for his business, Murielle, sponsorship, spending more time on own activities, Ines, Kids’team,  taking up another challenges elsewhere in Asia and Ilse, president, also leaving the country for other opportunities outside Thailand.

The Belgian Club Thailand was then needing people as I was the only remaining team member enrolled only since January. I have launched an appeal back in June (through our Brunch invitation email that was also forwarded by the Embassy and by Beluthai) to recruit some newcomers in the committee and keep our activities schedule alive & vibrant in the future. Fortunately, I received some emails from motivate volunteers! And, one new team is born in September, ready for a new beginning. You can find below a little more information about our new team for this season, including myself as President.

After the Euro Belgium-Ireland Game in June, the BCT started with a welcome back Sunday Brunch and a get2gether. Unfortunately, as stated above, the sadness has invaded the country last month with the passing of H.M. King Bhumibol. In this context, our duty being to respect our host country during its mourning month, we have then decided to cancel or postpone three events: Moules-Frites dinner, October's get2gether and the National Museum visit.

Don’t be afraid! If we are looking further, we still have several events in preparation like our get2gether each last Thursday of the month (November 24th). As in December, this date is Christmas time, it will be replaced by a special Rooftop after-work event on December 15th.

And of course, the awaited Sint-Niklaas / Saint-Nicolas encounter for kind & nice children on November 27th.

I would like to take this opportunity to express a warm welcome and a sincere “thank you” to all of new team members.

And of course I want to express my great appreciation to all the volunteers I have been working with. It goes without saying that without their help, the BCT would not have been so welcoming.

To those I didn’t meet yet… I hope to meet you soon. To those I already met… I hope to see you again soon.

Warm regards.

A short introduction to your new BCT-team

For the BCT, September is always very important, as this is the month in which the new membership year begins. This year also means a new committee.

Valérie Brouwers

I am Valerie Brouwers. I am originally from Mechelen. In the beginning of 2016, my husband got offered this job opportunity within his firm which required us to move to Bangkok, Thailand. For me it is my first expat experience but my husband already worked as an expat in China. We arrived in Bangkok in June 2016, and ever since it has been a really nice and rich experience. I engaged myself for BCT since I think it is important to create an atmosphere and a place where Belgians can meet and have fun. Since I am quite new in Bangkok, I will mainly occupy myself with promotion on FB and the website. Of course I will also be a helping hand for my fellow team members in organizing events.

Julie du Bois

Expatriated with my family since 2008, we made a first "five years stop" in Poland before coming in Thailand. We have started our fourth year in Bangkok in August 2016. I have two children of 12 and 9 years old. In my previous life, I was working as an Intensive Cares' nurse and teaching in a Nursing school in Brussels. As volunteer, I was president of "Cracovie Accueil" during 3 years and I am still involved here with the "National Museum Volunteers (NMV)". I did the Membership for two years and now I am organizing Monthly Lectures at the Museum. Therefore, I hope to bring a special little touch of art and culture in BCT.

Anneke Leysen

Two years ago my husband and I embarked upon a new adventure, we moved to Bangkok! A life very different from the one in Brussels. Back in Belgium, I studied in Leuven and Brussels. Before moving to Thailand, I worked as an attaché involved with economic studies for the Belgian Foreign Trade Agency.
I joined the BCT to get to know our Belgian community better. I will be involved in organizing events. Let’s share some experiences together. I hope to meet all of you soon!

Marie Logé

After studies, Marie started her career in banking. The late 2000s weren’t the best time to be start in finance, and she wanted to have a tangible product to work with. Thanks to the prince Albert fund, she packed up everything to see more of Asia. There she stumbled on a Belgian SME: BKS implanted in Malaysia, immediately loved it and has been working for them ever since. After 3 years in Kuala Lumpur, she recently moved to Bangkok to open their new office. Passionated about sports, she is delighted to join the BCT team, connect with other Belgians and share some happy moments.

I am currently working (specialized in finance) on development and cooperation projects in Thailand, Laos and Malaysia. I should stay in Bangkok 4 years…..

I'm on the road since August 2010 with my husband Philippe, my son Jean (12y) and my two daughters Eve (10y) and Line (7y). After Yokohama (Japan) and Abingdon (Virginia), we have settled in Bangkok since July 2015!
Our main home is located between Namur and Charleroi, but my home-town is Chimay (Cheers !-). I have studied in Namur and Louvain-la-Neuve and worked as actuary in Brussels before following my husband around the World and gaining expertise in home-made dessert cooking (waffle, chocolate cake or mousse, Speculoos ice-cream …) !
I have really enjoyed BCT activities and I am now proud to be in the BCT committee. I will do my best to ensure the club remains a great source of friendship and a great place where all Belgians and friends will enjoy meeting and participating in the activities we will organize.

Past events

EURO2016: Ireland-Belgium @ Sportsman

Saturday June 18th, Euro2016, Belgium vs Ireland, two countries at Sportsman Bar for an evening made of football, Belgian beers and Irish stew! We were many and happy to see Belgium wins 3-0 that night.
Great success for this joint event with Belgian Embassy and Beluthai!

Welcome back brunch @ British Club

On September 18th, first date of the season for the new team of the Belgian Club and members, it was in the splendid gardens of the British Club that the BTC has organized a brunch in Belgian colors. The BCT team arrived well before time to check the latest details.... We were all very excited to see the first guests coming at this first event. 56 guests gathered for a drink before discovering the buffet. A bouncy castle was available for children allowing parents to relax and enjoy the brunch while getting to know old and new members.
The atmosphere was very friendly and it was a great relaxing time which inaugurated the 2016-2017 season of the Belgian Club.

G2G @ Café des Stagiaires

On September 29th, BCT organized his Get2gether at Le Café des Stagiaires. They set up for the Belgian guests the first floor of this typical European bar that follows his customers from breakfast to the dancing hours of the night.

It was a very nice “ambiance”. About 30 people gathered there and enjoyed each other’s company with many Belgian beers as Duvel, Chouffe, Orval, Chimay, ….

After the happy hour from 7:00pm to 9:00pm, BCT members were offered a special discount of 10% on beverages and it was well appreciated, it turned out to be an enjoyable evening.
